IN HER OWN WORDS…
MY Y FACTORS: “Artistry, Culture & Community, and Well-Being.”
Y WISDOM: “The best time to discover (and photograph) a new destination is first thing in the morning, in the beautiful soft light of ‘golden hour’, watching a town ‘wake up’ as the locals set about their day, and seeing an authenticity in exploring the quiet streets before the crowds descend en-masse.”
Y WISHLIST: “I would love to grab my camera and explore the beautiful blue & white tiles and gorgeous architecture around the streets of Lisbon and Porto in Portugal (with the occasional rest break for a café com leite and a Portuguese Tart).”
At the age of 16, Lisa Atkinson found herself 'deep in the heart of Texas' on a year-long student exchange program. During that year, she discovered an unbridled love of Mexican food, a short-lived fondness for cowboy boots and big hair (In her defence it was the late 80s, in the spiritual home of cowboy boots and big hair...), and most importantly, the two passions that have driven her personal and professional life ever since - Travel and Photography.
These dual loves set Lisa on a path of exploring the world throughout most of her twenties, and finding a way of connecting with a destination and its people through the lens of her camera. With her trusty Canon around her neck, Lisa snapped her way through Europe, Turkey, Morocco, and back across to her 'second home' of the USA, and by the end of that decade, she was juggling working full-time as a Travel Advisor during the week, and photographing weddings on the weekends.
Although these two professional paths (and job titles within each) have evolved and criss-crossed several times over the ensuing years, and as rolls of film and youth hostels have been (thankfully) replaced by SD cards and an obsession with boutique design hotels, both of these professional journeys continue to hold great importance in Lisa’s life and continued travels. In her role as Marketing Concierge at Y Travel, Lisa is thrilled to combine the skills and knowledge of both paths, with her love of communication and storytelling - both visually and verbally - across Y Travel’s marketing platforms.
