Peru Unveiled: Leora’s Journey Through Ancient Marvels

Embark on a vicarious adventure through the vibrant tapestry of Peru as our seasoned Travel Advisor, Leora, shares her firsthand experiences in this South American gem. From the ancient wonders of Machu Picchu to the extraordinary journey on Belmond Andean Explorer, join Leora on a captivating journey that unveils the rich cultural tapestry and awe-inspiring landscapes that make Peru a must-visit destination for every wanderlust-stricken soul.

What type of traveller will appreciate Peru? Someone who is curious and open to new sights and sounds, and great flavours. For travellers who are used to holidays in Europe, North America, and Asia, Peru can feel slightly outside their comfort zone, but that’s what makes it so enjoyable and exciting.

Best time of year to visit? Go during the off-season (April and May or September) to avoid the crowds and help alleviate overtourism, which is a concern here. I visited in September and was pleasently suprised by the lack of tourists. April is after the rainy season, so the mountains will be even greener.

Don’t forget to pack: Altitude tablets and a warm jacket for the evenings. The altitude can be a challenge, so take that into account; we found the tablets worked fantastically.

Make sure to ask your advisor to book: The two-night journey from Arequipa to Cusco (or vice versa) on Belmond’s Andean Explorer train. The immersion into countryside and culture was different than anything I’ve ever experienced, and the service was outstanding - it’s a must-do!

The highlight: The Sacred Valley village of Ollantaytambo and its surroundings. The Old Town dates back to the Inca - its archaeological sites are second in importance to Machu Picchu - as do the nearby Maras Salt Mines, which are simply stunning.
